Big Cat, Small Cat written by Amy Rubinger

Recommended for: New readers, storytimes.
Rating: 5 purrs out of 5

Rubinger, Amy. Big Cat, Small Cat. Ill., 24pp. $13.95. ISBN: 978-0—7892-1029-6.

Boldly illustrated and highly interactive, Big Cat, Small Cat (translated from Hebrew by Ray Baitner) is a poetic storytime delight. Each page features two cats with a short descriptive line (for example, the line “This cat is small” accompanies a clearly decipherable and visually pleasing image of a small black cat) above or below their body. The simplicity of the text and the word repetition allows children to complete each rhyme by using the appropriate word; however, this clever book leaves out the correct rhyming word, so children are forced to rely on the cat’s picture to use the proper vocabulary. Early readers with little reading experience can easily draw conclusions about the text from the expressive cat portraits (look out for the “bad” cat!). Though there is little storyline to the book, its effectiveness as an entertaining reading tool is summed up in the to-the-point concluding rhyme about the cats’ and the reader’s bedtime. Children and caregivers will love that the book is playful, colorful, and fun to listen to over and over again. Highly recommended for preschoolers and early readers.
